Description

One of the very rare Hamble One Design gaffers which were designed and built in 1913 by Luke & Co Boat Company on the Hamble River (just upstream of the Royal Southern Yacht Club). It is believed that only 6 were built before the First World War and here is one of them which currently has no name, but at some point was named Alert by her previous owner in West Country.

​

In the early 2000’s she was saved from a beach in Suffolk and spent the next 20 years in a barn being restored, a new mahogany transom was fitted, new keelson and several planks along with a new spars (she still has her original gaff).

​

This year (2021) she found her way to a classic boatyard on the East Coast where she was the subject to some much needed love and care, seams were calked, some new planking, new floors, varnish and paint.

 

Built from Oregon Pine on Elm frames, at 18ft she the Hamble One Design is the perfect day boat, or even gaffer racer, now awaiting her new chapter and without question she is a very important part of maritime history.
