Description

Courageous is without doubt a piece of sailing artwork, designed by Olin Stephens at the Sparkman & Stephens design office in 1947 she was built at Henry B Nevis yard, she is one of the last yachts to be launched from the Nevis yard during Henry’s lifetime.

Originally designed for Arthur Iselin to be a fast weekend cruiser/racer in Long Island, he specified for the large deep cockpit which is still a true feature of Courageous character today. Olin always described her as a mix between a New York 32 and an 8 Metre race yacht, what was achieved was an extremely elegant yacht that was able to do it all and she certainty proved that with some offshore racing in the mid 50’s.

The interior is a very traditional layout which provides sleeping for 5 guest in three single berths and a v-berth forward. The accommodation can be described as basic but functional, with beautiful wood work and varnish – radiating warmth.

Courageous is a time capsule, in original trim with nearly all her original fittings still in place, most importantly she is purposeful and can be found sailing in Long Islands classic circuit.

The next custodian will be extremely proud to own this wonderful part of American yachting history.
