Explorer was built in 2003 for, as the name suggests, exploring parts of the ocean that very few boats of this size can reach.

Built by Ocean Dynamics, this 35ft Rib was to set a new record crossing the North Atlantic with Bear Grylls. They completed that crossing in a record 15 days and as quoted by Bear in 2003 it wasn’t the simplest of adventures: 'There were undoubtedly more moments of jeopardy out there than I had ever anticipated and, in truth, if I had any idea of how frightened all of us would be at stages, I would have thought twice before leaving.'

Since the record Explorer has been relatively lightly used, in comparison to crossing the Atlantic! She was used on the Thames River for a period of time and then purchased by her current owner who used her as a commutating vessel to his private fort in the Solent.

Fitted with a single Caterpillar 3126 450hp Diesel engine on a Twin Disc TDJ130 water jet, Explorer is able to give you a top speed of 35 knots (at reduced fuel levels), she holds 3,750 litres of fuel which can easily give you a range of 1,000 nautical miles at cruising speed.

Explorer is ready for her next adventure with a new owner!

Bear Grylls asked Ocean Dynamic to build him a RIB which could take him plus his 5 crew across the North Atlantic. Ocean Dynamics were already building the 35 Ribworker for other commercial uses, so they used that concept and customised the superstructure to allow for a small cabin and fuel tanks which would hold enough fuel for the 15/16 day crossing.

What was launched in 2003 is an absolute beast of a vessel, built to withstand absolutely anything that the ocean can throw at it and most importantly to ensure the safety of the crew.

In August 2003 Bear and his 5 crew members, all dedicated adventurers, left Nova Scotia heading for John O’Groats in Scotland via a route just South of the Artic Circle. This 3,000 nautical mile trip would see the crew of Explorer see landfull in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Mary’s Harbour in Labrador, Nanortalik, Greenland, Reykjavik, Iceland, the Faroe Islands and finally Scotland.

During the trip the RIB and crew dodged icebergs and 30ft high waves. The longest leg of the journey was 850 miles which saw the team down to only 12 knots due to having to carry extra fuel and supplies.

Bear Grylls quoted after the successful record ‘The boat was fantastic and the Caterpillar engine didn’t miss a single beat, despite the ever-changing sea conditions with waves at times 30 ft high.’

Since the record in 2003, Explorer has had a much more relaxed life, spending some time on the Thames River and since 2011 has been a regular sight on the Solent with her current owner who has used her for commuting to one of the forts in the Solent.
